NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION FOR KIDS – READING!
9 Easy steps to READING!
While adults often create New Year’s Resolutions, finding meaningful ones for children can be difficult.
For children in Fullerton, a great idea is to make resolutions involving Reading!
You or a great Reading Tutor can create a list of New Year’s Resolutions for children of any age involving Reading.
Here are a number of examples that will help encourage your child to read:
- Reading together – A friend of mine started this with her husband, and now does so with her four children. Every month they choose a book to read. She and her husband alternate chapters aloud. Now, the kids take turns picking books and Reading to each other.
- Pick a new author – try and find a new author your child has never experienced before. You can pick a favorite of yours, one that writes in a style that appeals to your child, or have a Tutor or schoolmate suggest author.
- Reading 15 minutes (or more) every day builds discipline and a great lifelong habit. Kids in Fullerton who read more often have better grades, get higher test scores, and exhibit better Reading Comprehension.
- Read to your child every day – Many of us parents want Reading time with our children, but don’t make the time. However, Reading together shows LOVE. Also, your child’s pronunciation and vocabulary will improve over time as they hear you read. If you don’t have Reading time with your child every day, find a great Tutor that can.
- Have your child read to you every day- Both young and old children enjoy showing off how well they read. For a younger child or struggling reader, start with a book they know well. Even telling you about the pictures is Reading. oes so with her four children. Every month they choose a book to read. She and her husband alternate chapters aloud. Now, the kids take turns picking books and Reading to each other.
- Find a Tutor to help with Reading Comprehension – If your child is struggling to understand books at their grade level, hiring a Reading Tutor will help with Reading Comprehension and Retention. A tutor will identify where your child struggles, and then teach them ways to improve their understanding of stories and vocabulary.
- Get a library card at the Fullerton Public Library or your local library – Almost all libraries have free library cards for adults and children. The minimum age may vary, but if they can write their name, they usually qualify. Libraries also have a number of free Reading programs to encourage your child’s interest in Reading. Story time, Reading clubs, and Reading programs are great incentives for Reading. (My library has free In-n-Out coupons as rewards!)
- Reading an old favorite with a puppet – This is another great resolution for Reading. Reading a well-loved book with a puppet can remind a child why they enjoy Reading in the first place. They might also notice facts and words that they didn’t see before. Rereading a book after many years can bring up fond memories.
- Exchange a Reading book with a friend – Your friend might have wildly different Reading tastes than you. Exchanging a book with a friend can open your eyes to new ideas and Reading genres, and help break you out of a “Reading rut.”
