Many Geometry students in Irvine are currently studying right triangles.

Learning how to find the sides and angles of right triangles can be a bit tricky.  But with a great tutor at their side, your Geometry student can easily conquer right triangles!

You don’t even need Geometry tools like a compass or protractor with these special Right Triangles.

Besides Special Right Triangles due to their angles (45-45-90 triangles and 30-60-90) triangles, there are also a number of triangles where the sides have specific ratios.  These are called Pythagorean triples.  A Geometry teacher might mention them in class, but not explain them at all.

A Geometry tutor in Irvine can go over the fundamental concept that, if the sides are in specific, memorizable ratios, they are always right triangles.

The most common Pythagorean triples are:

3:4:5

5:12:13

6:8:10

8:15:17

7:24:25

9:40:41

The first one is the most common, and probably the easiest to remember for any Geometry student.  The numbers are “right” in order: 3, 4, and 5.  One student last week observed that five questions on his chapter test were just about 3,4,5 triangles!  Any of these triples can be tested using the Pythagorean Theorem.  Also, any multiple of these ratios above will also be a right triangle.  Go ahead, multiply any of the sets above by two, or three, or four, and then see if the Pythagorean Theorem works.  A Geometry tutor might ask your child to do the same, in order to understand that while the numbers might change, the ratio does not.  The new, larger triangle, will still be a right triangle.

Some Geometry students in Irvine find it pretty neat that if you know these ratios, then any multiple (like the 3:4:5 and 6:8:10) will also be right triangles.

In Geometry, there are also a number of less common Pythagorean triples.

These are rarely mentioned in Geometry class, but are fun trivia to know.  The special right triangles that are also Pythagorean triples, where the shorter side is less than 100, are:

52:165:173

57:176:185

60:91:109

65:72:97

84:187:205

85:105:137

95:168:193

96:247:265
