Fountain Valley was named for something you rarely see within a city – fountains. A very high water table and a large number of artesian wells, which were eventually drained and cultivated for agriculture, led to the naming of the city. Some of these were turned into round wells and fountains.

Radius – a straight line from the center to the edge (or circumference) of the circle.

Π – Also known as pi in Geometry, this Greek symbol is used to calculate the circumference and area of a circle. It was found by measuring circles that occur in nature, such as the circumference of tree trunks and flower stems, and found by the Greeks to be a constant number in the circumference and area of any circle. Pi is an irrational, unending, non-repeating number – computer systems are constantly calculating the next digits of π. Mattering on your Geometry teacher, you may round π to 3.14 or 3.1416 to calculate the circumference or area of a circle.
In Geometry, there are two ways to find the center of the circle. The first is to estimate and draw two diameters, passing through the widest part of the circle. Where these diameters cross is the center. The second is to draw two chords (a chord is a line that goes through the circle) and then use a compass to draw a line perpendicular to each chord. These lines will both be diameters. Again, where they cross is the center!
