Chemistry Tutoring: LAB SAFETY
At the start of the school year, Anaheim Hills Chemistry students were given basic lessons in lab safety.
Chemistry labs create great learning opportunities; however, occasionally Chemistry students forget the rules. This causes problems in lab assignments, as well as possible accidents and injuries to students. A Chemistry tutor, when reviewing lab write-ups, will often remind their students that a lab is not a place to joke and play. Basic Chemistry lab practices include following directions, being careful with hot surfaces, any reactionary chemicals, and always wearing the proper lab equipment. A Chemistry tutor will remind their students that not only does this make the lab safer, but also makes it easier to have a successful experiment and achieve better results.
The first part of a good Chemistry lab experience is following directions.
Anaheim Hills Chemistry students learn to read all of the directions first. They then prepare their equipment for the Chemistry experiment and know how to write up the results. Without following the directions, a Chemistry tutor will point out, not only could something go wrong, but a Chemistry student will receive a lower score on their lab. Most students that have a Chemistry tutor are looking to increase their grade and subject comprehension. Reading and following the directions is an easy way to do both.
Within the directions, as well as part of general Anaheim Hills Chemistry lab training, is safety.
Burners and open flames can be a fun part of Chemistry experiments, but being burnt is not. Every reactive material needs to be thought of. Non-reactionary materials include glass beakers and pipettes. Beyond these, Chemistry students need to be careful. Every element and compound, even something as simple as water, can become dangerous if handled incorrectly. Water can boil, freeze, or react becoming a toxic acid. Many lab chemicals are dangerous if ingested, and some are dangerous to touch. Wearing require gloves and careful handling of chemicals go a long way in Chemistry labs.
Wearing proper equipment in an Anaheim Hills Chemistry lab experiment is very important.
A Chemistry tutor will stress that if a teacher is handing out safety goggles, gloves, or lab coats, put them on. Again, chemicals are reactionary, and can take an unprepared Chemistry student unawares. Wearing any Chemistry lab safety equipment passed out will help the lab go more smoothly.
