What is Mathitis? Read on.

When I was in high school, I intended to pursue Biology at a local Southern California college like UC Irvine or Cal Poly Pomona.  But what I didn’t understand at the time was that there are a number of prerequisite Math courses you need to take in order to take the basic Chemistry and Biology classes that begin a study in Biology.  All I knew were the A-G requirements and that you needed 3 years of Math including Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. After the battle to get through Algebra 2 in my junior year, I decided I was done taking math since I met the requirements.

Because of this choice, not only did I lose a year of free Math education, while still at the high school level, but by not practicing my Math skills for an entire year, I lost a lot of what I had learned.  By the time I got into college I had to take a remedial Math course, which put me even further behind in the pursuit of a Biology degree.  I now needed two years of Algebra classes before I was ready to take Calculus, which I needed to complete before I was eligible to begin the Chemistry classes that would start me on my path in the study of Science.  Having goals, like getting a degree in Biology, are very important, and knowing the requirements for attaining those goals are critical for success.  If I had understood how much Math I was going to need to take to get this degree, I may have been more motivated to put forth the effort in my Math classes in high school.

As a typical high school student I had trouble seeing the long-term value of the skills that I was learning in school and I had tuned out the voices of knowledge and experience that my teachers and parents tried to provide.  Sometimes a young student needs the outside perspective of a person that it not a parent or teacher to help hear the message of the importance of learning.  This can be another beneficial reason to get a Tutor.  Tutors act as role models of success in academics and mentors that show by example the worthwhile effects of diligently pursuing an education. I’m proud to call myself an outstanding Tutor today.
