GEOMETRY TUTORING IN LADERA RANCHUNDERSTANDING QUADRILATERALS: Rectangles
There are many types of quadrilaterals and some Geometry students have a tough time telling them apart.

While elementary school students learning Geometry for the first time can easily draw a rectangle and tell you what it looks like, High School Geometry students may have a harder time memorizing all of the properties of rectangles.
Rectangles are all around us. Sidewalks, curbs, notebooks, pieces of paper – these are all rectangles. But what sets a rectangle apart from other quadrilaterals?
A good Geometry tutor will explain the important geometric properties of a rectangle:
- Opposite sides are parallel. This means the there are two sets of parallel (same slope) sides in a rectangle.
- Opposite sides are equal. The parallel sides noted above will be equal to each other. A common Geometry problem for students in Ladera Ranch is that one side of a rectangle will be shown as a measurement and the opposite side as a variable. For instance, one side may be shown at 5x and the other as 10. Using Algebra, you would set these equal to each other:
5x = 10
Divide by 5, and
X = 2
- All four angles of the rectangle are equal. Since the angles of every quadrilateral add up to 360 degree, this means that each angle of a rectangle is equal to ninety degrees (360/4). Therefore, a tutor may help a Geometry student set up a Geometric proof to find that:
- All four angles of a rectangle are right angles. Each angle is equal to ninety degrees. Each side will be perpendicular to the one next to it.
- The diagonals of a rectangle are equal. This can be proved using the Pythagorean Theorem, as we discussed in an earlier post. Each diagonal is the hypotenuse to a right triangle formed by two of the sides, and the triangles are congruent to each other.
